for future refrence you get tar's. Those files a archiver in your gui should be able to open or most file managers. Then once extracted you enter them and typically as user do the following:

./configure && make && su -c make install

it will prompt you in the end for a password then it will install the program. The password it needs is root. Some don't need the configure so you'd use:

make && su -c make install

the && means exec command and if it finishes fine then run the next.

You can manually remap extra keyboard keys. It involves the xmodmap if I remember right. It's .Xdefaults that has some of that in there and thats also btw where you fix your cursor if you want it to have a different theme. Though some window managers let you do it from control centers some dont (I manually change mine for example in fluxbox)
