but know you can also simply change "mouse1" to "mouse2" if mouse 2 isn't connected it wont use those settings it will default to mouse 1.(I know this because I forgot to uncomment and remove some extra mouse settings once and another time I tried to get my tablet working along side the trackball)

The remapping of what exactly the mouse buttons do is more a GUI thing as far as I know. I use fluxbox and it has it's own file to control what actions a mouse does. In KDE or Gnome try their control centers as I believe it can be adjusted in either of those.

Basically the defaults are:

middle button: if you highlight something text wise then go to a blank spot on a doccument and click the middle button it will auto copy and paste to the spot you clicked what you had highlighted.

Right button should give you right click menu you get in windows.

Left mouse button is again same as in windows only it takes one click to launch something.

Actually as mouse ability goes I wish the linux default for the middle button windows had the same result for. I really liked the feature anyways when I went to linux from windows.

Now if you want to change the look of your cursor in the GUI there is more than one way to do it but I could tell you how if you like. :)
