Linux, Xorg & Screen Resolution by Tarinaky2005-01-16 12:14:25
  Here's how I did it in debian/KDE by purplepineapple 2005-01-16 12:26:10
First, I googled for my monitor's full specs; I knew from using it in windows that it could go to a higher res & refresh rate than what it was running, but needed the details.

Then I edited xf86config-4 using emacs, changing the values for the refresh rates and adding "1024x768" before "800x600" for EVERY display depth. The applicable section looks like this, now: (cut off after first display depth, sorry it's a bad paste)

Section "Monitor"
Identifier"IBM E74"
HorizSync28-69
VertRefresh43-85
Option"DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier"Default Screen"
Device"Generic Video Card"
Monitor"IBM E74"
DefaultDepth24
SubSection "Display"
Depth1
Modes"1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
