Windows 2K, Hard Drive w/o DMA, bios seems right. by williamashbless 2005-01-16 12:04:13
Alright, so I installed a new hard drive in my machine. I made sure the BIOS saw it, and as far as it knows, the hard drive should have DMA turned on.

It is the primary slave. The primary master is my original hard drive, which always has, and continues to, operate with DMA on.

Both my CD RW and my DVDRom are on the secondary, and both operate with DMA on.

For some inexplicable reason, the primary slave refuses to operate with DMA on even though the bios settings at boot say it should be otherwise.

I've checked the device settings in the Computer Management tool for the primary IDE channel, and the slave (Device 1) setting is for "DMA if available". The current transfer mode is locked into PIO mode, and refuses to change.

I noticed this trying to play a game recently that used to work, but now stutters badly, and it relies fairly heavily off of continuous streaming of data from the HD. (Even if the DMA setting isn't the cause of the game stutter, which I'm pretty sure it is, it is my focus right now).

I'm not much of a Windows hardware settings guru, but that's more from lack of knowledge, than from capability, I think. :)

Anybody got any ideas?

What might I have missed in my quest for DMA on all of my devices?
