They did Something Evil to it - it somehow locks itself to the core components in your machine during installation, and if you make major changes to your hardware (most notably, mainboard upgrading), it has a bloody conniption-fit. There may be a way to get around it, but nobody I know of has found it yet; I've found it takes less time to just reinstall the OS and let it set itself back up.
