Is a BMI of ~19.5 normal? (n/t) by raptor_872004-12-30 16:10:06
BMI is faulty! by hieraco2004-12-30 18:44:23
Not exactly faulty, by run.dll2004-12-30 19:28:22
It most certainly is faulty. by retiqlum22004-12-30 19:48:48
I'm aware of the cube scaling principle, by run.dll 2004-12-30 20:04:35
but in actuality, people don't scale that way. (Photoshop a lineup of people varying in actual height from 140 cm to 200 cm but normalized to the same height - it looks weird.)

Two other points relevant to this:
The recommended BMI is a very broad range. (Take a height and calculate the weights corresponding to BMIs of 20 and 25 - it's quite a wide range, intended, of course, to take into account the wide variability of body compositions.)
It applies to the broad majority of people with "approximately average" body structure. If your body structure is clearly quite different than average, then it obviously may not apply.

As I mentioned previously, any easily calculated single digit measure intended to indicate a healthy weight range is bound to be a considerable approximation. However, exceptions notwithstanding, the BMI is a useful figure for the majority of people.
