Is a BMI of ~19.5 normal? (n/t) by raptor_872004-12-30 16:10:06
BMI is faulty! by hieraco 2004-12-30 18:44:23
It was used by the Canadian military for years. We had one lad in our unit who was 5'5" in height and they wanted to throw him out because his BMI was way over the "normal" line.
Thing was this guy was FIT. He could bench press a VW and out run guys 6' tall. (both sprint and Long Distance).
The BMI is strictly BODY MASS. and since muscle weighs more than fat, it provides no real indication of level of fitness.

The guy was eventualy sent to the Aero-space testing centre to have his body fat measured in an emersion tank, turns out he had something like < 7% body fat. He managed to get a medical exemption from the BMI tests.
