I don't know why "they" can't do science fiction any justice on either the large or small screen. Here they took a trilogy that won multiple awards and has never (or at least rarely) been out of print for thirty years and simply threw away everything that made the story worthwhile.
If LOTR can be successfully retold on film (admittedly it took three extended-length films a director with vision and a budget to match) then certainly the world of Earthsea could be treated fairly as well.
I particularly don't understand why they used events, characters, adn places from two of the three books to tell a story derived (and loosly at that) from only the first book. Along the way the race of almost every significant character was miscast, events were re-ordered, and the cult of darkness that dominated the second book turned into a brightly lit locked room under a temple dedicated to light.
It was painful to watch, and I wish I hadn't bothered to transfer it from my TiVo to a DVD before trying. I would have saved the $0.75 for the blank platter otherwise.
