Probably 6 months. I'm going for the "lifestyle by adiplomat2004-12-30 15:47:01
I'm doing the same by niwikki 2004-12-30 16:02:56
when I say look at my "diet", I mean look at what I'm eating and what I can change.

I think that's why I lost the 20 pounds in 3 months (I cut out the breads and pastas because, as a carbohydrate addict, those caused me to eat more without ever feeling full), and didn't lose anything more for the following 9 months (but managed to keep it hovering around that lower level, though I did gain back and lose again 10 of those pounds a few times).

My primary lifestyle change has been to keep track of what I'm eating (content and quantity) and my daily weight. When I notice that I'm eating something excessively (especially something unhealthy, usually because it's become a habit), I try to find something to give me a bit more variety. If I find that certain things cause me to eat more, I stop buying those things.

I've been able to keep rice and potatoes without issue, and sometimes as a treat (usually at restaurants rather than at home) I'll have some bread before a meal or some pasta as a meal... and I'll let myself buy sandwiches now. But I do find that I stay within what some diets would assign me as a target calorie range better if I avoid the breads and pastas. It also helps me to get close to the RDA of protein and potassium better while still staying near the calorie range. Yeah, I've become a bit OCD about tracking all that stuff too... but my focus on that is tracking it, not forcing myself to stay within it. If I'm hungry I won't make myself suffer simply because I'm "out of calories" for the day or anything like that.

My primary purpose is to be healthier. I've already been able to eliminate my cholesterol medications, thanks to the change in diet and exercise. I can also climb the 5 flights of stairs to the top of the parking lot at my school (provided I'm not carrying a heavy bag) without my knees and ankles hurting or running out of breath... that's one accomplishment from the weight I've lost so far. Being lighter and able to fit into smaller clothes (and therefore able to shop at normal-people stores) would merely be a nice bonus... but I've still got a ways to go before I get to that point.
