dd if=/dev/hda | bzip2 - > hd.img.bz2

of defaults to STDOUT, the dash parameter to bzip2 says read from STDIN and it will automatically write to STDOUT, and > redirects STDOUT to the file named. Slower, but it'll store it compressed. Not really useful if you have space to spare.

Also, you can loopback mount that .img file (not compressed) and use it as a live file system. Cool, no?
