| Print to PostScript, apply Perl |

If you install a PostScript printer driver (any one at all, it shouldn't matter) you can print to a file. Just make sure you don't let the driver produced "modern" compressed PostScript. There is a standard marker for page boundaries, and the driver should be capable of producing PostScript that complies with the document structure conventions.
At that point, apply Perl to shuffle the pages as required.
When we did this at my company to self-publish a 150-page reference manual, we shuffled the result to print two copies of the book on 8.5x14 paper which was chopped in two just before covers and binding were applied. The resulting PostScript file was delivered directly to the print shop, who did the rest.
I believe that the Perl script in that case simply inserted a few lines of PS per page to slide it over 7" and render it a second time. That turns out to be nearly trivial to do in PS, and nearly impossible to do right in Word directly.
One key to keeping the cost down was to minimize the physical fuss and bother by never reuqiring that the stacks of pages be handled other than one cut and the binding. |
