a specialist can recover data from the disks themselves by removing them from the casing and reading them directly. Drives can fail for many thousands of reasons but the data stored on them shouldn't be lost unless there is an extreme reason (magnets are extreme btw)

So either a) run a magnet over it and say... tough its screwed or make the suggestion to your client. Basically say "look there is no chance of me recovering any more data from the disks, there is a chance that this company will be able to recover a large percentage of the data from the disk but there is no guarantee that it will be the stuff you need. It'll cost $xxx"

My friend paid £400 for some data recovery, unfortunatly they only recovered about 5% of the disk but they still charge full rate.
