You give up when you honestly believe that you've done all that is practical. If the data that's been lost is a routine correspondence for the user's brother or sister, then I'd say that you've done more than enough.
If what's been lost is business critical financial data, then depending on the impact of the loss, it may be worth while to send the drive to one of those companies that specialize in these things and can recover data from an HD that's been baked in an apple pie.*
*Supposedly an actual occurance. The story I heard was that someone baked an apple pie with an HD inside and sent it to a company offering a reward to anyone who could send them an HD from which they could not recover the data (I forget if it was all or a certain percentage). With this drive, they were able to recover the data. |
