and gently explain that if they truly want the data, they're going to have to pay a disk recovery service through the nose with no guarantee of success. That should serve to make them into religious users of backups. I remember a customer years ago whose hard drive crashed was crying in my ear on the phone. They had five years worth of data that had never been backed up and contained all the financial records for a business. The thought of recreating all that could be recreated from hard copies gave him an anxiety attack. I spoke to him some months after that and they had learned their lesson. They purchased a tape backup unit and used it regularly afterwards.
