at what point do you give up... by scragman 2004-12-30 14:17:42
I've been working on a drive over the past few weeks, trying to get data off of it. I feel that I've done all that I can (searched from windows, knoppix, used some demos of data recovery software, tried ghosting the drive), and continued use will only lessen the chances of getting data from it. The user, on the other hand, doesn't think that I've done all that I can, and feels that I should do more. The reason for that is that there is data on the drive that the user needs, and that wasn't part of the recoverable data. Even the data recovery software that I used was only able to find a small sliver of the data the user wanted, which gave them hope that the rest would magically appear. The hardware diagnostics I ran confirmed my suspision that the drive is failing. Short of spending money on more software to recover one users data, do you think that I've done enough? I've done all I know, at the very least. Suggestions would be wonderful from anyone, as my experience with data recovery is limited.
