I'm not sure if this is what Fireballmatt had but your puzzle is haunting me here is what I think is a solution Weigh 1 Divide the coins into 3 groups of 4: G1, G2, G# weigh G1 against G2 If balance proceed to weigh 2.1 with coins from G3 Else proceed to weigh 2.2 with coins from G1 and G2 Weigh 2.1 For convenience letter the 4 remaining coins: a b c d take and unsuspected coin and letter it x Weigh x,a against b,c if balance coin d is the phony else proceed to weigh 3.1 Weigh 2.2 For convenience letter the 8 remaining coins: abcd efgh Weigh abe against cdf if balance proceed to weigh 3.2 else proceed to weigh 3.3 Weigh 3.1 Weigh b against c if balanced a is the phony coin else if x,a was heavy in weigh 2.1 the light oins is the phony else the heavy coin is the phony Weigh 3.2 Weigh coin g against h if G2 (from weigh 1) was light the light coin is phony else the heavy coin is the phony Weigh 3.3 if G1 (from weigh 1) was heavy if abe is heavy weigh a against b else weigh c against d the heavy coin is the phony else weigh e against f the light coin is the phony does this work?
