as a child, because I grew up when they were originally broadcast. I also read the Charles Addams cartoons. The film was closer to the cartoons than the old TV series (which didn't really capture the macabre aspect of the family, since they probably couldn't get it past the censors of the day). The TV series was very "loosely" based on the Charles Addams cartoons from the 1940's and on. (he went to my university a long time ago, and was awarded an honorary degree the year I graduated)
