Great movies and Jackson deserves much credit for bringing an approximation of the story to life.

But as an adaptation for the themes and ideals covered in the book, Jackson seemed often to miss the point.

Three examples:

1. The concept of absolute power corrupting absolutely was personified by and in the Ring and the Ring's corrupting influence was shown only anecdotely in the movies. In the books, the Ring IS the main character, but in the movies, it's often an afterthought.

2. The treason of Saruman was a major influence in the books and Saruman's lust to take the Ring for himself and stand against Sauron was a major development in the plot and in that whole part of the story. Having Saruman be simply Sauron's stooge dismisses entirely the notion the corrupting influence of the Ring and that Saruman wanted it for himself. It makes no sense that movies showed Saruman to be acting on Sauron's behest to try get the Ring if all he was planning on doing was giving it back to Sauron. The Ring doesn't corrupt people by telling them they could be some other guy's lackey.

3. Serious botch in the movie (was it Two Towers) where the Nazgul sees Frodo with the Ring in Osgiliath. The WHOLE purpose for sending Frodo and Sam was that Sauron would not know where the Ring was going and who had it. The good guys wanted Sauron to fret over which of the Wise would emerge with their own claim to the Ring, all in order to distract him from looking to the small, insignificant ring bearer sneaking into his borders.

When they showed that part in the movie, I actually shouted out "NOOOOOO!!!!". My wife just shook her head and hid her face. She agrees with me, but didn't want to get thrown out of the theater.
