"The Lost Worlds of 2001" was that Clarke was writing the novel in consultation with Kubrick and Kubrick was still working off of Clarke's writing for the movie. Even if it was being adapted as he wrote, it was still being adapted from the writing.

For that, I would still consider it an adaptation.
