As an adaptation of "The Sentinel," an older short story by Clarke that he chose to expand and rework, it's fairly effective.

In the other case, it's not so much an adaptation as a parallel creative process between the movie and the book 2001: a space odyssey. As such, the movie falls apart at the end during the highly symbolic scenes following Bowman's trip into the monolith, where the book is much more descriptive without being too literal.
