The retcon was clumsy, and there wasn't the sheer darkness of Mad Max. It was just the props and costume departments being given free reign. Mind you, I suspect we can agree that Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome did Unsavoury Things with donkeys, and that Mad Max 4 is going to be Mel drooling his way across the post-apocalyptic wastelands on a motorised wheelchair...
