Disconnect everything that is not essential, including pulling out any cards that are not absolutely necessary (e.g. sound card, network card, USB card, firewire card, whatever).

Disconnect any IDE and/or SCSI drives that are not your primary hard drive. This includes any CD/DVD drives.

Literally, strip it down to the M/B, CPU, RAM, HD, KB, Monitor, and Mouse. Make sure the HD has the jumper set for CS or whatever the setting is for a single HD without a slave.

When you've got it down as basic as you can, boot it up that way.
