Has Political Correctness gone too far? by dab2004-12-21 17:59:31
  hmmm by celticess 2004-12-21 18:45:31
I don't care if they sing it. Only thing I wish is that they would quit using karoke of it(my roommates dad sings each xmass carol at least 3x before moving on... I like carols but geez)

I do admit some groups have a point that their holiday should also be given some consideration/attention. However I don't like the bending the other way into trying to vanilla it all too. If your celebrating x thing they your celebrating X thing. Why should that bug anyone provided they aren't hassling you about what you do or don't celebrate?

Btw they do celebrate Chinese New Years here however it's not a stat off. I think people of asian ancestory can ask for that day off and can't necisarily be refused. Just like if non christians say they want to work on xmass day and are indifferent to it. But anyways I mean they celebrate chinese new years in that there are advertizing for it, festival events, and some signs, etc put up for it. It's one of the more visible holidays that isn't christian based here. However Chanikka is also mentioned with the big menorah lighting and Kwanza. Though aren't as advertized.

Unforutnately I think all holidays no matter your belief system has gotten a bit too commercial last 20 yrs. And yes the countries trying to legislate things away go too far. Seperation of church and state. That means the church has no right to tell the government what to do and visa versa. Also that each individual has freedom of religion and political view(not particularly combined). I have no problem with say a politican shouting out merry christmass and happy holidays to all. As long as he doesn't try to legislate that "all" follow his faith kind of thing. I don't know if that makes sense... *shrug* But I have no problem with the parliment buildings having a xmass tree or menorah or anything else festival wise present this time of the year or any other applicable time of year. If they were really in my face about it yes it would bother me but if they are unobtrusive and it's simply a friendly display trying to spread joy of the season I see no real harm. *shrug*
