Transparency does not appear to be trivial, I'm not after a gif-style binary transparency, I wanted the whole alpha range. The final image won't have transparency of course, but the layers do. Seems like a good idea though with the colour curves... except that by doing a layer 'add' of a non-white colour, the logo won't end up yellow, because the underlying patter colours will be 'added' to the logo colour.
