...that lets you surf and post is that your machine is getting an IP address from the cable network - since the modem is plugged into the switch, and the switch and the AP part of the router are on the same physical segment, your laptop can see through the modem and to the ISP's DHCP router on the far side.

What's probably going wrong is that the router's WAN connection is not configured to get an IP address via DHCP, which is why you can't get access through it.
