In my opinion the US presence in Iraq by Peace_man 2004-12-21 16:35:29
is morally suspect, and any deaths resulting from it are not benefitting any Iraqis. I don't expect anything good to come from it.

I also suspect that the only lasting peace in Iraq (except a semblance of peace bought at gunpoint) can only come from a made-in-Iraq solution. Which is impossible as long as the US uses its soldiers to dictate terms.

It looks like the easiest solution would be for the US to simply pull out and let Iraqis decide the fate of Iraq. But that would not be a humane solution - it would only result in a bloody civil war. Humpty Dumpty cannot be put back together again.

I appreciate the bravery and sacrifice of the US soldiers given an impossible task - they should not have been there in the first place, but they are not equipped to make that moral decision - so there they are.

I sincerely hope a good solution can be found. Any solution simply based on an imposed government enforced at gunpoint is simply Saddam's regime all over again and makes a mockery out of everything the US soldiers had to do to oust him from power.
