...was the natural outcome of a conflict where communication was not possible. That's a very different situation from what's happening in Iraq.
In the Ender's Game scenario, lack of communication was critical to the outcome: the Buggers could not communicate with humankind, and vice-versa. Both species were acting in a manner inimical to each other's continued existence, albeit with different motivations on each side. Because neither species could communicate their motivation to the other in terms the other could understand, the only possible result was continued violence until annihilation of one sepcies by the other was achieved.
In Iraq, however, as in all human conflicts, communication is possible. Therefore, other possible outcomes exist besides genocide. When an alternative to genocide exists, it should be investigated -- even if for no other reason than the fact that genocide is wasteful and irreversible. That's the whole point to Genocide as a sequel to Ender's Game. |
