22 soldiers dead in a mess tent today by Kickstart2004-12-21 09:51:40
  Body Count: Min 14880, Max 17076 by MikeCDN2006-11-19 12:55:59
The problem with these numbers is not by ManiacJoe 2004-12-21 14:46:12
the numbers themselves but what can be drawn as conclusions from them.

In this case, to get the numbers as large as possible, all the deaths caused by the conflict have been grouped together. This loses most of the contexts of the deaths thus removing the ability to make valid conclusions from the numbers beyond "it bites to be in Iraq right now." This level of data is not that useful.

Breaking down the numbers a little, the vast majority of the deaths are of civilians. Breaking down the numbers further:
- Some (few) are collateral damage (accidental) to military action.
- Most are purposely targeted by the terrorists or used as human shields by the rebels.

From the military side:
- Some have died due to combat situations.
- Some have died due to non-combat situations / accidents.

Now at this level, the data has many uses.
