I thought that the prohibition on eating pork was there to discourage the Jews from settling down. After all, to raise pigs you need a lot of water, and agriculture, so you can feed the bloody things. And the Jews, a nomadic people, who periodically came down from the hills to smite a few farmers, had no desire to settle down and get (smitten?) by the next batch of hill people... Aren't fertile crescent politics wonderful?
