Back from the toy bank by celticess 2004-12-21 13:05:37
Yes I went the wrong day yesterday realized it and came home and went the right day today... Blame lack of sleep and being busy on the going way too early.

If any of you ever donate to the toybank please consider older kids. There are plenty of donations to the young set but the bins for the older were near bare. They tend to buy what they can for the teens from cash donations because they get so many gifts for little ones and so little for older.

When I went in there was for boys on their shelf: 1 watch and 1 shaver/aftershave with binoculars.

The rest was teen girls. Lots of teen girl makeup kits, hair dryer or two with curling iron. One funky lamp/hippy door covering thing. Gender neutral they had a few cd players, a few small ghetto blasters, and a snowboarding pc game.

The stocking stuffer bin for boys had one deflated soccer ball and a sports bag. The girls was full of makeup and purses.

I ended up asking if I could go to the younger kids table and get my son something from there. He has a cd walkman and a ghetto blaster so I left those to kids that could really do with one. I wont let him near a non electric shaver(not that he needs to shave yet) due to his hand problems. He had a soccer ball and sports bag from the prior year. I was able to find him a neat spy kit thing meant for younger kids but he does like spy vs spy stuff(this was night glasses and parabolic listening antenna with headphones).

The boardgames table also didn't have anything for kids about 9 and up I'd say.

Now toy bank is a wonderful thing. I'm very thankful for it. It was overflowing for the younger kids and even for teen girls(though the girls didn't have as much selection as little kids). But next time you donate a toy to the toybank please also consider the older ones. The toybank staff specifically told me they had a rather severe problem this year for things for teen boys though every year is hard for teens in general.

Next year I think I will go for the sponsorship christmass hamper instead of regular. Because I know there will be a problem with the toys due to my sons age. But once I'm done school and working I can tell you I'll probably look for a sale or two and buy stuff I know both genders will like and donate it. I'm too poor right now and must use such hampers. But knowing what that is like is also part of why once I can afford it I will donate to such hampers. As it is I do donate to the food christmass hamper... I've just not got to the point of being able to do anything for the toy one.
