the "make-you-think" sermons are more in liberal pulpits who are asking "why do we understand it this way, and do we need to re-evaluate"; and "are there other valid ways to understand this, and how does that affect or actions?"

(there are pseudo "make-you-think" pulpits where the questions are only asked as an excuse to re-iterate the traditional answers)
To my mind, faith is about genuinely asking the hard, uncomfortable questions than about nailing-down the "right" answers.

I know of quite conservative (eg. Lutheran) communities that are committed to doing this, even if it's painful and upsetting. But most seem more into butressing the answers that they grew up with, and blaming any discomfort and disonance on the "outside" society.
