Settle an argument someone? by syren2004-12-21 07:19:39
  In 1952, Arthur C. Clarke by HeyRef 2004-12-21 08:13:14
wrote a novel titled "Islands in the Sky". A burning match on board a space station was used as a minor plot device. Clarke guessed correctly that, in the absence of an air current, the flame would form a ball at the end of the match. However, he thought that the accumulation of combustion byproducts would quickly snuff the flame.

"Islands in the Sky" is about a teenage boy who uses a loophole in the rules of a contest to get a trip to several space stations in Earth orbit. The book was probably meant to appeal to a young audience like Heinlein's "juvenile" novels ("Tunnel in the Sky" comes to mind). It was one of the first Clarke novels I bought and I still find it an enjoyable read.
