After reading the other comments in this thread, I think it would be technically possible to convert your recursive function to an iterative one, but I can't imagine that you would be able to do so with less overhead than compiler.

Even if you can build your stack in optimized, machine-level code, you'll trade off the overhead of the recursive function call with extra stack processing and my guess is that it'd be hard to do that more efficiently than the compiler would.
