I take it you are new to babysitting. Kids of 7-8-10 (should) have a "natural" sleeping hour. That is: while watching Schrek for the first time, YOU don't really watch the movie (OK, you SEE it) but instead you keep an eye on the kids while THEY are watching it. At a certain moment, the younger one(s) ... show you they are losing their attention.
THAT is the time their mind and body unite to WANT to sleep. Of course, the movie isn't over, so you have to guess: if the movie now still has half an hour to go, you mis their train AND the opportunity to put them in bed without ANY problem at all.
Unluckily you missed that moment, and probably you missed it for the 10-year-old too.
There IS another way ou: you STOP the movie, and you fake that YOU are tired. Well, at least you "need a break, and a glass of cold water". So you go to the toilet and (at least) flush. Then come back with your "glass of water": they want one too if you have one, and if the parents provided frewt jews or fanta: take THAT.
After that, you pretend that you didn't get "the plot": have them TELL you the end of thestory -they just saw it 2.5 times, they don't mind missing the end of the movie, if they are allowed to MAKE it end in their minds.
This tactic can bring their sleeping trains back, and they will still have about 5 hours of sleep.
For a next time: pick a movie you may like but don't "have to" watch, then BABY-sit instead of movie-sit. That's the whole point: you're there for the kids. And they'll apreciate very much if you let them stay up late, but they'll LOVE you for seeing they are tired and putting them to bed "with a little story". That story can be the end of Schrek, told by themselves, and with THEIR OWN ending. (remember: you didn't get it, so if they change it for you, let them do that, but don't have them turn Schrek into Wagner's Ring (five evenings)
You'll do fine, and next time WILL be easier. |
