9/11, which cost was higher? by McGowan 2004-12-19 20:09:22
Program on early today was talking about the measures being taken in the US, most specifically NY, to protect its citizens from the threats of terrorism. The program focused on personal protection as in emergancy equiptment and leaflets on what to do in the case of an emergancy. They then compared this to what we have in the UK, 6 simple words, "Get in, stay in, tune in" It basically means, get off the streets and turn on the TV for information. I dont know which I prefer as a way of protecting the citizens of a country as both have their merits. In the UK we are a hardend to the ideas of danger more than the US so it is obviously different.

Anyway the question is, in the eyes of the country which cost was more expensive to the US?

1. The loss of human life. When considering this think about the fact that some of the people who died contributed significantly to the US financially and intellectually.

2. Financial loss. This isn't just the costs incurred from the buildings but the loss of trade, the closing of the stock markets, the city coming to a stand still. Also the loss of faith from other countries who may consider the US now a riskier country to trade with.

3. The loss of face. US pride was hit that day pretty heavily America was no longer invincible.

So what should the government be doing? Would "Get in, stay in, tune in" be sufficient for america to protect it's people while more money is spent on actually defending the country or is it wise to become a country of paranoids walking round with gasmarks and escape routes planned?
