They cost about half-way between Winmodems and serial modems.

They first started appearing about 5 years ago (a year or so after most vendors stopped selling ISA hardware), which is when I got mine, a USR 3CP5610. Back then, it was difficult to get it to work under Linux, because Linux tended to assume that all modems were ISA or serial. But modern systems detect it out of the box.

Of course, I haven't used that modem in over a year now, as I am on broadband...
