Wow, herbs make you cool! by funky_monkey2006-11-19 12:55:59
This is not surprising. Nor is it new. by run.dll 2004-12-15 22:45:08
A few years back, a well known "natural" calcium supplement made from ground sea shells was found to have a high concentration of mercury contamination. The shells were harvested from the bottom of a bay into which industrial effluent had been dumped for decades. As appealing as the concept of "natural" supplements may be, calcium is an element (#20), and with the exception of a few stable trace isotopes, all naturally occurring calcium is the same. The stuff which has gone through purification in those evil stainless steel industrial processes is exactly the same and of guaranteed purity.

The same goes for herbal remedies. The biologically active ingredient can be identified and isolated in the lab, then packaged as a standard pharmaceutical at known doses, leaving all the unknown crap behind. Boiling herbal leaves was all that was available to people over a century ago, but modern pharmacy is far superior, however less appealing it may be to the new age crowd.

That being said, "natural" herbal remedies will continue to be a multi-billion dollar industry catering to the scientifically illiterate.
