There is a building materials company in the area that holds auctions of various building materials. Some is junk, so you have to know what you are lookig for.
When I remodeled our bathroom a few years (if you can call 7 a few) back, I went to $Big_Home_Store and priced various materials, including windows. I then went to the auction with a list of materials and prices in hand. I was bidding against some Amish contractors for a lot of windows. The way the auction works, if you 'win' the bidding, you get to pick as many of the items as you want. Some things you bid on the piece, and have to take a minimum (like five sheets of plywood or something) at the per-piece price. Others you bid on the entire lot, and otherds on single pieces, no minimum quantity - that's the way it was with the windows. They were similar in construction and style to what I had priced at almost $100 from the store. i dropped out when bidding hit the $95 each. The final sales price was for somewhere in the neighborhood of $150....for something you could buy int he store for about $100. I did get a good deal on some insulation though - bought the whole skid for less than half what I would have paid in the store. Same with some other materials. |
