My college was big on not teaching you "how to do things," but rather "how to think." Umm, okay. But I got invited to do some undergraduate reasearch, which funneled directly into my current career.
It's true that even the research did not teach me how to do what I am now doing, but rather gave me practice in applying the theory I had been taught in class to an unknown situation. That in turn meant that I was in a good position to get promotions, go into R&D, etc., rather than remaining a trained monkey. So in that sense I guess I am doing exactly what I was learning to do in college.
Except for the second major in Ancient Greek. That's still pretty much just flapping in the breeze. |
