if the exam is well conceived. A good open book exam is not, in general, easier to sit than a closed one, and they don't, in general, involve questions that simply require quoting from the texts. You usually have to be _very_ familiar with the material to be successful in an open book exam, at least in my experience. Also, one can argue that they are closer to "real world" situations.
