-they don't give out degrees with footnotes saying "this degree not applicable for the following specialties:"
-they don't expect you to have the same degree of familiarity as one with years of experience. (Not if they're reasonable.)
-my memory sucks too, but I am more efficient when I at least have an idea how a particular concept goes, even if the details are fuzzy. You get this idea by having once had it at your fingertips.

My physics and engineering students occasionally come up with the same comments - the same replies apply.
