That's why I'm not saying, "I believe this, so your old church must be wrong." My belief about a proposition and their belief about a proposition are equally meaningless; the proposition is true or false on its own merit. That's why I'm saying, "Here's why and how their interpretation butchers the text--both what Jesus directly taught, and the Bible as a whole." I'm giving reasons. Arguments. Connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
You are indeed arguing religion--other people's religion. And you're doing it poorly. In your first post, you asked, "why can't he flip back to not a sin, with jesus and the whole love your neighbour, and don't judge, stuff?" I explained why that argument doesn't make sense. Then you said, "I'm not arguing for an acceptance of NT acceptance of homosexuality, I'm arguing for a NT acceptance that Christians shouldn't meddle in other people's affairs." I pointed out that you're meddling, and you said, "But I'm not a Christian." So I explained why "don't meddle" is not a reasonable reading of the NT passages in question. At that point you brought in denominations, but the argument was about what can be reasonably inferred from the text.
The facts to which I referred are the facts of what the Bible records people saying and doing. As I understand the interpretation you're presenting--the interpretation your church taught--it flies in the face of those facts. If I'm understanding it wrong, or am mistaken about those facts, you're welcome to show me. If you don't, I'll maintain my position on what the Bible teaches about judging.
See, you're accusing Christians of hypocrisy for violating a teaching of Jesus--"Keep silent about sin." I've shown he didn't teach that; if I'm right, your accusation is baseless.
If you want to move to a basis of, "different interpretations are equally important," the most you'll be able to conclude is that members of your church shouldn't "meddle." If we're not using a basis of, "what does the Bible teach?" your argument can have no force with the very people you're trying to criticize. |
