                I think you've got a wording problem, there. by Ravenlock2004-12-14 16:40:34
                  I largely agree...But it's not a wording problem. by jugulum 2004-12-14 22:03:31
I meant what I said--"love your neighbor" can't be construed to mean, "Excuse your neighbor's sin," which seemed to be Mike's implication. As you say, sin isn't something that any person can ever excuse. As far as I know, even God has never "excused" sin--else the cross would have been unnecessary.

The hell issue you mention off-handedly is a bit more complex, I would say. "You will go to hell" is clearly off-base; that's something no one can know about another person. But what about saying the following to a person who rejects God? "I have no ability or position to judge your soul, but God has told us something about the standards He uses. If you die without Him, unrepentant, you'll be without Him forever. Yeah, that's hell."

as long as you acknowledge that such arguments exist and keep an open mind about them, from my point of view you're doing pretty well. ;-)
Sure, an open mind is of paramount importance. Anything else, and you're making your own prejudices your authority. Honestly, I'd love to find out I'm wrong; less sin means much fewer people are screwing around with their relationship with God.

I do know that there are arguments other than the bland "God is love/don't judge/love your neighbor" sort of thing. But every such argument I've seen fails, in my estimation.
