What class do you normally play?
I like to think that I'm one of the better players on the server but I find that if I join mid game I get slaughtered for the first map or two. In the end I realised that it was to do with my light weapons XP. Once you reach two stars the accuracy gets better, it's not a lot but it makes a huge difference at longer range and the number of headshots you get. For me it's enough to make the difference between being cannon fodder and holding my own.
That's partly why I never use the rifle nades when I'm an engineer, I would rather get the LW xp than the eng xp.
Rather ironically I get my best kill:death ratios when I'm a medic. I often die running into a huge firefight to try and revive someone but that extra 40 health* and regeneration makes a huge difference when I do get around to shooting back. (*Plus 40 because it's +25 for being a medic plus 15 once you get a certain level of battle sense, being a medic you tend to stay alive longer and so get more battle sense XP and get to that point sooner).
Also we are playing against humans not computers, humans can be tricked, predicted and above all can be unaware of what's going on out of sight. People have a habit of not seeing something in the corner of the screen, it normally results in their death. Your window into the game is a fixed size view, make sure you are watching the whole view not just the middle. And use the sound, if you hear someone shoot or reload but there is no one on your team shown on the local map in the corner then you know there is a bad guy around and what gun he has.
Watch first a newbie and then a good player in spectator mode. In particular watch the edges of the screen. The newbie will miss people, smoke, flashes of light etc. around the edges, they are only watching where they are aiming. The watch a good player, they can almost seem like they have a hack running to tell them where people are. One pixel the wrong colour on the ground or a single flash of a shot in the corner of the screen will tell them exactly where someone is.
So Talons basic advice for improving your W:ET playing:
1) Try and get your accuracy up, part of that is getting to a certain level of Light Weapons XP as fast as possible. Turning down the mouse sensativity a tiny amount can also help a lot. Having said that don't spend the whole time aiming and no time shooting. Unless you are sniping 30% accuracy is good enough.
2) Mix up your tactics. Plant mines in places the don't expect. Let them get used to you being in one place and then move so that you can catch them trying to seak up on that place.
3) Learn to use the full area of your screen and look behind you and in the corners. If you get killed without even seeing the other person more than 1 in 5 times then you aren't looking around enough. Or more likely you are looking but not seeing or hearing.
4) Don't worry about class XP. Once you are staying alive longer the class XP tends to build up naturally. All the time you are doing class specific tasks you aren't looking for bad guys. |
