Exclusive and meddling are equally applicable to both the high ranking Reps and high ranking Dems; the two just have different sets of topics they meddle with.
The minority Religious Right gets all the attention because they are very vocal and very persistant. Similarly there are minority far left groups that are vocal and persistant. The vast majority of the folks are in the middle, but they are silent. It is similar to the minority of the population casting votes at election time resulting in there control over everyone.
At the moment the Reps are in power with the far right screaming in their ears on issues dear to them. While I tend to vote Republican, the RRight is usually not in my interests. Back when the Dems were in power (and still locally in Seattle) I need to watch out for the far left with there equal amounts of stuff not in my interest.
What I have noticed in watching the power swings is that while all the middle folks have to keep tabs on the extreme ends of the political spectrum, they tend to keep fewer tabs on the side they lean toward when that side is in power.
The best way to counter act the Religious Right is to constantly show those in power that the RRight is just a very loud, small group. Unfortunately this takes time and effort. Most folks are too lazy.
