but a few thoughts:

there is no way anybody will ever be able to turn America into a Theocracy, [...] nor are there any politicians striving to achieve this.

IMO, the current efforts at regulating marriage on the grounds that it is a "sacred institution" (GWB's words not mine) and at regulating education and private medical decisions based on the religious convictions of a segment of the population are a start. The ability of some politicians to deny that this is a violation of the separation of church and state is alarming, chiefly as indicating the probability of further encroachments. The number of letters to newspaper editors, posts on this forum, etc., that argue that "Everyone votes in according to their own morals; what's wrong with voting according to my Christian morals?" while being utterly blind to the distinction between "voting according to my morals" and "voting to make everybody else obey my morals" is likewise alarming.

anybody [...] not blinded by ideals should be able to see that abortion isn't something that should be used as birth control

The question has always been "who decides?" Who decides what is a medical necessity, what is a hard choice to preserve an individual's emotional health, and what is casual use as a substitute for a diaphragm or a cold shower?

third graders should not be taught about sex [...] or anything like that

I am unaware of any program to do so, except insofaras children get basic social ideas about people going about in pairs, and needing to know that no one has a right to touch them in ways that make them feel uncomfortable. The debate about sex ed is, AFAIK, about programs for junior high and high-school aged kids, who are either in the middle of or just about to enter puberty-- at which time they very much need to know what the heck is going on.
