But arguing against the death penalty is putting the bandaid in the wrong place. Mistakes will be made regardless of the form of punishment. Such a strong penalty as death actually forces the legal system to be much more careful. Juries tend to think hard before sending someone to the chair. Fifty-three verifiable false positives in the entire nation over a century? Sounds like the juries are doing a great job. We are improving, too. Think anyone had 10.61 years (the current state average for Texas) to think about how to prove their innocence before being put to death in the early 1900's?
