A possibly misguided perception: Republicans by Illiad2004-12-14 16:31:52
I'm a 'republican' that agrees... by Anonymous Freak 2004-12-14 17:50:05
I consider myself a Republican after actually carefully sitting down and reading the 'position statements' of the major American parties a few years ago. I am a social liberal (I'm for: Gay marriage, abortion, physician assisted suicide, legalized recreational drugs.) I am very in favor of State's rights (the rights of individual states to make their own laws unfettered by the Federal government.) And I am a fiscal conservative (low, simple taxes, small government, and little federal government regulation except as necessary to safeguard the public against physical harm from corporate greed.) While the first one (social liberal) has never really been associated with Republicans, the other two have.

But the current 'Republican' administration seems to be the exact opposite on states rights and government interference; while retaining the 'usual' social conservatism. (a.k.a. Religious Extremism.) I have voted for many Republican Senators and Reps, and quite a few state and local Republicans. But the current party is just going WAY too far right-of-center for me. I don't want to give up on the party, I want to change it from the inside. But those who are trying to change it are facing that very same 'with us or against us' mentality, to drive out those who they see as 'against' them. I definitely do not agree with the Democratic party on taxes, government influence, and state's rights. But I may have to, because the MOST important area is civil rights.

The Republican party seems to be working to take away some Americans' right to pursue happiness, by banning various means of that pursuit. (How can my lesbian aunt be truly happy if she can't get married?)

(Okay, I made up that last part about having a lesbian aunt, but it does sum up my feelings on the issue well.)
