(someone was asking) why people despise MicroSoft by swisscheese2006-11-19 12:55:59
  <long_rant> I'm not a great fan of Microsoft... by EhreVerriet 2004-12-14 17:14:48
BUT...I'm even less a fan of all the crappola associated with all the pithy lawsuits filed by companies over the years for alleged "Unfair" practices...although I *DO* (like most of us here) see Steve Ballmer's hand controlling the Darl McBride sock puppet...it's just business...in the business world...when you're a decision maker and trying to succeed in making a company profitable...nice guys finish last (or more to the point...nice guys file Chapter 11)...personally...I'd be far more apt to be nastier toward competition than Microsoft was...competition IS good for stimulating better product...competition is good for consumer pricing...competition is good for a "Fair Marketplace"...competition is good for the consumer...

...that said...competition is BAD...better product has seldom been achieved through having competition and price wars...just take a look at Detroit in the late 70's and early 80's...some of the worst examples of automotive history hit the streets during that period when oil prices went through the roof and Japanese cars became a viable option for the mainstream...it was great for the Japanese companies...but for America's "Big Three" suffered for it...GM and Ford quality and standards suffered...Chrysler had to be bailed out by the Government (so we could see our dignitaries being chauffeured in stretched K-Cars)...most of the Fed-Bailout monies went to Japan anyway...the chief partner in Chrysler's resurrection was Mitsubishi...Chrysler bought cheap Japanese motors and hired consultants from Japan on how to streamline production to offer a cheaper and disposable product...

...there are a few UFies who remember the days before the oil crunch of the 70's...and the quality of "American Made"...remember the 'cudas...Mustangs (before the POS Mustang II)...Cameros, Cadillacs and Corvettes before SMOG motors...there were other mistakes made during that time...like that of the government during the oil crisis giving in to the enviro-nutbags in forcing more strict emissions on our cars...but ignoring the REAL problems created by factories...power plants and oil refineries...automotive emissions only accounted for about 6% of total polution...please don't get me started on the "Global Warming" or "Greenhouse Gasses" or "Ozone Layer" tripe...not when Mt Pinatubo blew it's stack and produced more pollutants in a couple days than the entirety of humanity since the beginning of recorded time (5 times over)...but I digress...

BUT...Competition is inevitably bad for consumers...granted "Price Wars" are desirable in the short term...but over the long haul...it hurts more than most realize...with less money in the coffers of a nameless conglomerate...wages will not increase...jobs will be "Downsized"...improved products cannot be produced...there's less (or no) money for R&D or purchase of improved technologies...

...Competition is the death of innovation..."Fair Market" and Anti-Trust are the desperate cries of mismanaged companies who feel their product should be the one creating a monopoly and not the bigger guy...it's "Me Too" or "Johnny isn't sharing"...remember it's this whole "Me Too" attitude which elected Bush for another four years...

There have been numerous companies championing these childish causes and declaring the big corps the enemy...RAMBUS...Sun...SCO...Netscape...Borland...just to name a few...and yes even my favorite whipping boy and producer of computers...Apple is guilty...Apple is also the most rampant abuser of companies trying to develop for it's platform...but people don't complain 'cause Apple *IS* the little guy...the little guy with the closed platform...but I still like Apple and buy their product...and still code for their product as well...

I'm not a Microsoft Apologist...I'm not a Fan of mediocre product...but I *AM* a fan of creating standards...and I like .NET...it's something the Windows World has needed for a LONG time...oh...did I mention I'm a Microsoft ISV...cheapest way to get legitimate product...and I'l be the last to complain about the way I've been treated by Microsoft...M$ has been good to me...
