I was making my own assumptions, as well. For example, I pictured these young men (I didn't know why you had it in caps because I saw this first) as possibly avoiding a draft in their country for an unjust war; as possibly being very good contributors to labour/the economy (if they're healthy-ish); as being part of a family that misses them. I had some difficulty picturing "young men" though. They ranged in my head from about 8 years old to about 23. And I had difficulty trying to figure out why they couldn't wade in to shore but I don't know that much about coastal geography so perhaps it's common that water is too deep for people but too shallow for bigger boats.

As an aside, I think most violence is a bad thing, regardless of the sex of the victim(s) and the perpetrator(s).
